Chapter XII

Then like a levee giving way to a flood, the words flowed.

"Get the others!" Nebiah shouted as she hauled Cassia toward the footpath. "Tell them to bring the Scroll!" She gave Cassia a shove and returned to look upon me.

"O uncomprehending witless me!" I cried. "How could I overlook His power for so long! How could the obvious escape me until now! Nothing in this wasteland can stand against the Message of the Shepherd! Every barrier of the enemy will come crashing down before it! The Barren Land will be remade!"

On this I expounded throughout the morning without respite. A crowd collected and sat down upon the lawn. Buckets of washing were set aside. A cooper arrived in his apron, hammer in hand. Nebiah, mentor, and Cassia sat in a row with three copies of the Scroll of the Shepherd open to different passages. And I went on and on until the shadow of the dial marked the third hour.
