Chapter VI

It took a moment for the request to sink in. Then dread. What would I discover there? I willed my legs to move, and they obeyed, but as if dislodging from deep mud. I approached the door and rapped feebly. Within a few moments it swung slowly open. It was her, now clad in a grayish blouse and a form of trousers I have never seen. She mumbled something and gazed in no distinct direction with pupils that were like tunnels into a void. Then she turned and I followed her into a foyer lighted only by the fairy beams that emanated from adjoining room. She led me in and took her place on the divan. I stood to one side, able to view both the lantern and what was, I supposed, her family.
